Dear KONA Aquatics Family,
As many of you may already know, last week before our Thursday afternoon practice the team had a short meeting during which I announced that after years of planning and careful consideration, I would be stepping down as the KONA Aquatics Age Group Head Coach.
While this has been challenging decision for me to make, I am excited about what the future holds for all of our swimmers and the team as a whole for the following reasons:
- I will continue to coach the masters team, guide and mentor Coach Eric on the finer points of stroke mechanics, sports psychology, proper training cycles, and the importance of the team to Kona community. This will be ongoing. Coach Eric, along with Coach Kristen, will take over the day-to-day implementation of the training program for our age group team.
- I have a very close 40 year relationship with Coach Eric who grew up in my program at Punahou on Oahu. Eric shares my philosophy in coaching, and has a deep commitment to the long term development of our swimmers.
- Eric developed our new website (kona-aquatics.com) as part of his way to get to know the history and development of our team. He is currently adding new features to our website which will allow all of us to take advantage of this new platform and further leverage my experience in the sport.
- Eric and I will work together to help our swimmers who are juniors and seniors in high school and are interested in swimming in college find the right program and, if possible, receive financial aid.
Thank you so much for supporting my decision. Please feel free to reach out to both Eric and I if you have any questions. See you all at the pool or in the ocean!
Mahalo, Coach Steve
